Lake Chapala Society programs December Health Day

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) is responding to the popularity of the organization’s October Fall Health Day by planning another day-long event for all residents, guests and visitors on Wednesday, December 9.

LCS membership is not required for those wishing to take advantage of the services.

Volunteers will be available in the LCS gazebo between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to provide free blood pressure checks. Those interested in learning about possible interactions between their medications and supplements can also find assistance.

Free skin cancer screenings can be scheduled between 10 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. in the LCS clinic.

Two programs will be featured during the event. Dr. Salvador Flores will present a program entitled “Sudden Death: Prevention and Treatment. Basic CPR,” from 10-11 a.m. in the sala. Flores’ class is free for members; non-members will pay a 50-peso fee. Sign up is required by Friday, December 4.

If there is sufficient interest, Flores will teach a second group in the sala from noon-1 p.m.

At 2 p.m. in the sala, Cruz Roja volunteers will conduct a workshop on the use of their Emergency Medical Information Kit, which includes bilingual medical information form. This new system provides vital information and should be kept in the refrigerator for easy access by first responders in case of an emergency.

Also available at the December Health Day will be the extremely popular flu, pneumonia, shingles (Zostavax), and Hepatitis A and B injections. All injections require previous registration in the LCS office prior to Monday, December 7. The flu and pneumonia vaccines can both be received on the same day but those planning to receive either the shingles or hepatitis shot cannot receive any other injection. The fees for the vaccines will be paid at the Health Day event.

The available injections and prices are: Zostavax (Shingles vaccine): 2,300 pesos; Flu: 320 pesos; Pneumonia for Life (Prevnar 13): 1,500 pesos; Pneumonia, 5 -year: 600 pesos; Hepatitis A & B series:  1,000 pesos for the first shot. The second shot is given one month later, with a booster required at least six months after that. All three injections must be given to provide protection.
