Special holiday events

Virgin of Guadalupe Day

The English-speaking congregation of San Andres Catholic Church will meet to celebrate the feast of Nuestra Señora, la Virgen de Guadalupe on Saturday, December 12, 9 a.m.

Many lakeside villages will conclude special fiestas for the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe with masses, processions, fixed fireworks displays, carnival rides, bands and other special events.  Take time to drive through the Seis Esquinas neighborhood of Ajijic, the streets of San Antonio and San Juan Cosala to see altars neighbors have created to honor the virgin known as the “mother of Mexico.”

A Christmas Extravaganza

Kina Dutro, musical director at Lake Chapala Baptist, is finalizing plans for the church’s seasonal event on Wednesday, December 16, 6 p.m. The Christmas Extravaganza will be a fun-filled evening with choir numbers, dramas, sing-along music, solos and instrumentals by participants of all ages.  Following the program will be a complimentary soup dinner. The church is at Sta. Margarita 147 in Riberas del Pilar. For directions or information, call (376) 765-2925.

Let’s Go Caroling

Members of the Lakeside Carolers head out to sing Christmas carols at three assisted living homes on Thursday, December 17, 10:15 a.m. The first stop is at 11 a.m. at Casa Nostra, followed by Alicia’s La Paloma at noon. There’s a lunch stop at Centro Laguna Mall before the final location of the day, Abbeyfield, at 4 p.m.  The carolers meet again on Saturday, December 19 to visit the OHANA Assisted Living Home in San Juan Cosala, from noon until 4:30 p.m.

The Lakeside Carolers was formed to fill the need of new expats at Lake Chapala who missed annual caroling. Each year, a few more folks don Santa hats or drape a holiday scarf around their necks and join in the singing. The group has no rules, rehearsals, dues or officers.

Villa Infantil Posada

The children who live in the orphanage Villa Infantil de Guadalupe and San Jose have been working for weeks practicing for their annual posada and nativity play on Saturday, December 19, 3 p.m. The 30 children have delightful costumes for all of the roles in the play – from sheep and shepherds to the cow, burro and the wise men. All are welcome.
