Hawaiian Luau fundraiser planned after San Antonio soup kitchen closes

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the soup kitchen in San Antonio Tlayacapan that operated under the auspices of Operation Compassion has been forced to close.

The kitchen operated for six years on Calle Jesus Garcia, feeding between 60 and 100 women, men and children daily. It also served about 30 shut-ins with meals delivered each day.

For the past year, the nature of the food program has changed, and now dispenses groceries to 63 families every second week from the Family Development Agency (DIF) center in San Antonio. A local organization had agreed to help with 20 more families, but found that they were unable to do so. The aim now is to dispense groceries on a weekly basis to these needy families.

For this reason, Operation Compasasion is sponsoring a Hawaiian Luau at Roberto’s on Monday, March 7. Cocktails are at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes a welcome Mai Tai and an appetizer course of mixed tropical fruit, seared Ahi with ginger sushi, coconut fried prawns, spring rolls with peanut sauce. The entrée is glazed suckling pig, spicy luau chicken in banana leaves, Hawaiian Fried rice with pineapple, cucumber mint salad and mango mousse and coconut pastry triangles.

Tickets are 325 pesos (including tip) and available at Roberto’s, or by calling Tom at (331) 547-2726 or Suzanne at 766-4184.
