Weekly Worship - August 27, 2016

Saint Andrew’s Anglican

It’s party time at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church this week, both during and after worship. Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon – “Get Down and Party!” – is based on a dinner party that Jesus both attended and disrupted, and then proceeded to redefine for all time.

Then, in place of the usual post-worship “Coffee Hour,” those present are all invited to join in a pot-luck party marking Fr. Winston’s final Sunday as rector of St. Andrew’s.

Sunday worship at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church begins with the Holy Eucharist at 10 a.m. There is no Sunday School this week.

On the last Sunday of each month, donations provide lunches for Mezcala schoolchildren. And every Sunday, the feeding programs supported by St. Andrew’s welcome donations of non-perishable food items, left in the baskets by the Church doors.

St. Andrew’s is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Lakeside Presbyterians

Pastor Ross Arnold’s lecture series on “A History of Western Thought: Why We Think the Way We Do,” continues Friday mornings at 11 a.m. in the Lakeside Presbyterian Church.

While it may sometimes be hard to see, God continues to be very involved in the world – especially by providing for the needs of the Christian church.

On Sunday, August 28, Pastor Ross Arnold of Lakeside Presbyterian Church will offer a sermon entitled “For the Common Good” – considering how God continues to provide everything necessary for the church to flourish, if we will only be obedient.

The Lakeside Presbyterian congregation meets in their church building in Riberas del Pilar. Turn toward the lake on Calle San Jorge at Mom’s Restaurant. The church is two blocks on the right. English-language services at 10 a.m. and Spanish-language services at 9 a.m. and noon.

Lake Chapala Baptist

Says Brother Bob Hendrick: “As I approached the side of the bed to give my wife a kiss, what I thought was the tail end of the dog lying on the floor beside her, turned out to have a head on it and I kicked the poor dog in the head.  The room was dark. The only light was coming from the tablet my wife was perusing.  One problem with darkness is good intentions carried out in the dark can cause calamity as well as blessing. Jesus said His followers are the light of the world. We should be illuminating blessing and helping avoid calamity. One more life-note: When you swoop in to kiss the girl, make sure you are aware of which way the pitbull on the floor is pointed.”

The Lake Chapala Baptist Church celebrates worship service each Sunday, 11 a.m. at Santa Margarita 147 in Riberas del Pilar.

Little Chapel by the Lake

Pastor Jonathan Admire will give a sermon taken from 2 Timothy 2:14-26 at the 11:30 a.m. at the Sunday, August 28 service at the Little Chapel by the Lake.

Says Pastor Admire: “This is the last cowboy song.  Paul tells Timothy, his son in the faith, that he is being poured out like a drink offering. Paul’s fight was good, his race is finished, he has kept the faith.  Join us this week as we look at Paul’s farewell letter to the Church.”

Coffee and refreshments are served before the service.

The Little Chapel is located at Carretera 10 in Chula Vista. For more information, call 766-2538.

New Hope Christian

The congregation of New Hope Christian Fellowship will begin its second year with a service of worship centered around being heart healthy. “We take all sorts of measures to keep our hearts healthy,” says Pastor Gene Raymer.  “We watch our diets, we exercise, we take medications to make sure our heart keeps working.  We need to take similar measures to make sure our spiritual hearts remain healthy, too.”

Along with the message will be hymns of praise and prayers of thanksgiving and petition at the Sunday, August 28 worship service.  Following the service, members will travel to Yves’ Restaurant to continue their fellowship.

New Hope Christian Fellowship patterns itself after the first-century Christian church, promoting basic beliefs and practices found in the New Testament. Services are held in the upper room of the Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. For more information or directions, call the pastor at 376-766-3435.

Christ Church Episcopal

Christ Church Episcopal will observe the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, August 28 by joining their brothers and sisters at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar to help celebrate the pastorate of Fr. Winston Welty as he leads the service there for the last time as rector.  Fr. Winston is retiring, but he and his wife Mary will continue to be residents of Lakeside.

This means there will be no Christ Church Episcopal service at the Little Chapel by the Lake on August 28.

Christ Church Episcopal sponsors a Bible study Tuesdays, 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel by the Lake.  Join the congregation as it tackles the Book of Daniel.

Wednesday, August 31, 4:30 p.m., members of Christ Church Episcopal will join the Lakeside Singers in a sing-along at OHANA’s retirement home in San Juan Cosala. Later, at about 6 p.m., the group will dine at La Mision Restaurant, Rio Bravo 7 in Ajijic.

San Andres English

“God made the new covenant of His love with the poor, the lowly, the down-trodden and the oppressed.  It is therefore in a spirit of humility, the spirit of Jesus, that we make our celebration today, asking Him to accept the homage of the humble.”

So says Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min., who will offer the homily “Jesus, The Mediator of a New Covenant” at San Andres Catholic Church’s English-language service Sunday, August 28, 9 a.m.

San Andres is located at the corner of Ramon Corona and Parroquia, one block from the Ajijic main plaza.

Hu Chant

Chanting HU, an ancient name for the Divine, while in a contemplative state, is a simple technique to open your heart to greater happiness, love, inner peace and understanding.  Join in a Hu Chant Saturday September 3, 10:30 a.m., at the Center for Spiritual Living located at 17 Nicholas Bravo, Ajijic, for a short (30 minutes) group HU Chant followed by refreshments and fellowship time.
