Weekly Worship - September 24, 2016

St. Andrew’s Anglican

It is a pretty well-known fact that there are two types of faith: one that is based upon intellectual acceptance of doctrine, and the other, which responds to evidences of the Holy within the ordinary.

In his sermon, “Worth More than a Baseball?”, Rev. Andrew Krumbhaar will talk about that lively spirituality/faith that helps us appreciate the treasures of God within the ordinary, and gives us the strength to run to obtain God’s promises.

Worship begins at 10 a.m., the bilingual children’s Sunday School starts at 9:45 a.m. and a coffee hour, a time of fellowship and welcome follows the service.

On the last Sunday of each month, donations provide lunches for Mezcala schoolchildren. And every Sunday, the feeding programs supported by St. Andrew’s welcome donations of non-perishable food items. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to rice, beans, pasta, oil and salt.

The Company of Gentlemen meet for their monthly luncheon Wednesday, September 28, noon at Adelita’s Restaurant in San Antonio Tlayacapan.

Feelings of grief and loss can occur during times of transition.  The Rev. Robbin del Nagro will offer a class on Wednesdays at noon beginning October 12 through November 16 on the book, “All Our Losses, All Our Griefs” by Kenneth R. Mitchell and Herbert Anderson.

A memorial service for long-time member Bob Tennison will be held on Thursday, October 6, 11 a.m.

St. Andrew’s is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Lake Chapala Baptists

Says Brother Bob Hendrick: “Since nothing exists that God did not create, I assume that PowerPoint was in His mind as far back as the Garden of Eden. It might have been used in Genesis 3 after “fruit-gate.” Slide 1) What you had … Slide 2) What you did … Slide 3) What you get. Nowadays we use media presentation software designed for a worship service. But the specialized stuff allows me to import the old faithful PPT presentations. As I was working on a multi-slide program lately, I saw that I could practice my presentation and it would remember my timing so that I could do it over and over precisely the same way. For a 31-slide PPT show timed to music, that is OK. But in the rest of life; and especially in personal worship, that is a problem. The Bible says that the mercies of the Lord are new every morning. Our response to His mercy needs to be more than just hitting ‘play’ for our same old (even if carefully crafted) presentation.”

Hendrick will give the sermon at this Sunday’s 11 a.m. worship service at the Lake Chapala Baptist Church, at Santa Margarita 147 in Riberas del Pilar.

New Hope Christian

With the AV system corrected, it will be business as usual on Sunday, September 25 for New Hope Christian Fellowship. The non-denominational congregation will meet as usual at 11 a.m. in the upper room of the Presbyterian Church in Riberas del Pilar.  Along with hymns, scripture and prayers, Pastor Gene Raymer will deliver a message he has given the title, “It’s The Thought That Counts.” Explains the pastor, “’It’s the thought that counts’ is what we usually say when we give or get a bad gift. But according to Jesus, it’s really all that matters.”

Following the service, members will travel to a local restaurant where their fellowship will continue.  For more information about the church or directions to get there, call the pastor at 766-3435 or 333-724-6179.

So far, in his series on spiritual gifts given to Christians by the Holy Spirit, Pastor Ross Arnold of Lakeside Presbyterian Church has provided an understanding of the gifts of leadership and service. Next, on Sunday, September 25, he will present a sermon entitled “Gifts of Compassion.” In a world where there seems to be so much need and pain, the Christian gifts of compassion – healing, hospitality, intercession and mercy – seem especially important to all of us.

The Friday lecture series on “A History of Western Thought: Why We Think the Way We Do” concludes September 30.

Unitarian Universalists

Pete Soderman discusses “Goal Setting and Modifying Self-Defeating Behaviors” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Sunday, September 25.

What would a goal-setting paradigm for modifying self-defeating behaviors look like if it actually reflected how the brain learns and stores information? Soderman, the author of “Powerless No Longer: Reprogramming Your Addictive Behavior” looks at this question, and suggests some answers. Fred Harland is the service leader.

The Unitarians meet 10:30 a.m. at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar, opposite the bell tower, on the north side of the Carretera.

San Andres English

“It is our purple and fine linen, our life of ease and our love of wealth, that it is mocked today by Christ, the center of our celebration, who in the presence of Pilate stood like a Lazarus covered with sores and wounds and spoke up as a witness for the truth.”

So says Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min., who will offer the homily “Behold the Man!” at San Andres Catholic Church’s English-language service Sunday, September 25, 9 a.m.

San Andres is located at the corner of Ramon Corona and Parroquia, one block from the Ajijic main plaza.
