Visit gorgeous homes; help disabled children

The Behind the Walls home tours will soon begin another season.

Each tour offers a glimpse into four beautiful homes in the Ajijic area. Tour dates are November 16, December 14, January 25, February 22 and March 14. All of the proceeds benefit the School for Special Children in Jocotepec, which serves children in the Lake Chapala area with physical and cognitive disabilities. The school provides more than 100 children with daily meals, health services, special events, assistance with educational programs and transportation, and supplemental food for the families.

Students range in age from 40 days to 18 years, and up to 22 years of age for afternoon workshops. Children served have Down’s Syndrome, West Syndrome, deafness, blindness, cerebral palsy, autism, and other disabilities.

Some former students have gone on to become artists, secretaries, carpenters, cabinetmakers, dressmakers, jewelry artisans and gardeners.

Although the wages of teachers, psychologists and social workers are financed by the government, all other support staff are paid through donations from the public.

Individual tickets for the home tours are 350 pesos, or 1,550 pesos for a season ticket. They are now on sale at Huerto Cafe (in Riberas del Pilar), La Bella Vida (on Constitution in Ajijic) and Charter Club Tours (on the main drag in front of Pemex in Ajijic).

You may request a driver at the time of ticket purchase. Tickets must be shown to enter the homes.

Tours begin near the pier at the second parking lot, west of the end of Colon at 10:15 a.m. and finish by 1 p.m.
