Laguna Chapalac – June 8, 2013

Trivia players will be excited about the Third Annual Trivial Pursuit Championship will be held on Wednesdays, June 19, June 26, July 3 and July 10, at 4 p.m. at Café Magaña in Riberas del Pilar.

Up to four people are permitted per team. The entry fee is 50 pesos per night or 150 pesos to play the entire tournament.

Favorite tournament fare will be onion rings and cheap booze.

Form a team, register with Magaña owner Jeffery and have some fun.

Canada Day

The Canadian Club of Lake Chapala will be holding their Canada Day celebration at La Nueva Posada, in Ajijic on Monday, July 1. Yvonne Chin, the Canadian Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner for Guadalajara, will be the special guest. This will be her last visit to Lake Chapala before retiring from her position to travel the world with her husband.

The no-host reception and social hour begins at 1 p.m. The picnic will be served outside in the lower garden at 2 p.m.

You can enjoy a “melt in your mouth” grilled hamburger on a sesame seed bun, with homemade coleslaw, potato salad and home style potato chips. Dessert will be a happy birthday Canada Day cake.

In addition, there will be a great Canadian Trivia Quiz!  

Tickets will be on sale from June 8-16 at Independencia 29 in Ajijic. Call 766-0926. Between June 17 and 27, tickets will be on sale at the front desk of La Nueva Posada, Ajijic.   Club members pay only 120 pesos  from June 8-17.

Members and guests pay 150 pesos  after June 17. Non-members pay 150 pesos, tax and tip included.  

Space is limited so get your tickets early. Everyone is welcome.

Club officials remind regular attendees that this event is the last chance to use their 2012-2013 drink tickets.

More Canadians

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch One will celebrate Canada’s 146th birthday with a picnic on Monday, July 1 at Paseo del Mirador 14  in La Floresta.

The doors will open at 2 p.m., with live music provided by Noe, Ray and Paco. There will be a special Canada Day ceremony, as well as a drawing for a beach trip (see below), door prizes and a tequila tasting by Don Vito.
Dinner, served at 4 p.m., will be catered by Manix and feature BBQ pork on a bun, baked beans, potato salad and accoutrements. Dessert will be a birthday cake. Tickets are 180 pesos.

The drawing prize is an all-inclusive trip for two (including tips) to the Hotel Riu in Nueva Vallarta on the weekend of November 25-29, including a luxury bus ride leaving from Lakeside. Only 100 tickets will be sold at 200 pesos each. The trip is valued at 8,000 pesos and is transferable. A portion of funds raised will go toward support of Casa Corazon.

“Peebey,” an Australian Shepherd owned and handled by Paul Rojas of Mexico City took the “Best in Show” honors at the recent national dog show held at Tobolandia in Ajijic.

Have Hammer open house

The Lakeside community is invited to an open house on Thursday, June 13 at the group’s Woodworking Learning Center located at Hidalgo 110 in Riberas del Pilar (across from Casi Nuevo and 7-11). The 4 to 7 p.m. event will highlight the Ajijic Rotary Club’s donation of new woodworking machinery to the workshop.

Bus trip

The Lake Chapala Society sponsors a bus trip to Guadalajara’s plush and pleasant Andares Mall on Wednesday, June 19. This shopping mall boasts Liverpool and Palacio de Hierro department stores, dozens of boutiques, footwear and fashion stores (including Zara), a food court (including Krispy Kreme), and several fine restaurants (including PF Chang’s). A Wal-Mart adjoins the mall.

The bus leaves at 9:30 a.m. and returns at 3:30 p.m. Sign up at the LCS table Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Tickets cost 200 pesos per person.  

 

Sunday school

Beginning June 30, St. Andrew’s Anglican Church will offer Sunday School for all children aged four and up.  There will be short lessons about the Bible and the Christian faith, as well as opportunities for outdoor play, arts, crafts, and music in both Spanish and English. Church membership is not required.  Sunday School will begin at 9:45 a.m., and end at approximately 10:30 a.m. Registration forms are available at the church office at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.  They should be completed and turned in by June 23.

More St. Andrew’s

Teacher Jesus, healer Jesus, prophet Jesus, miracle-working Jesus: St. Andrew’s this week begins to trace the life of Christ recorded by Luke’s Gospel.  Sunday morning worship begins at 10 a.m., and always concludes with a time of refreshment, welcome and fellowship in the Garden.

Little Chapel

The Little Chapel by the Lake will join the Christ Church Anglican Fellowship for refreshments prior to its 11:15 a.m. service. During that service Rev. Gene Raymer will conclude his series of messages on “The Fruit of the Spirit.” Following worship, members of the congregation will go to Azul Frida for their weekly fellowship luncheon.
The interactive study “What We Believe And Why” will meet at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning this week.

Center for Spiritual Living

“Sailing Thru” will be Reverend Tim Schubert’s topic for Friday, June 14 at the Center for Spiritual Living’s regular service (5-6 p.m.) at Nicolas Bravo 17.  

“The Secret” will be shown at the center’s Sacred Cinema on Sunday, June 16, 4 p.m.  

Everyone is also invited to attend “The Basics of Science of Mind” classes on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and “The Experience of God” on Thursdays, at the same time.  Thursday’s class is preceded by an optional meditation period from 10 a.m. to 10:20 a.m.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 (southwest corner of Santa Clara and Sta. Margarita) in Riberas del Pilar. On June 9, Marion Blackmer will present, “(The Great Unmentionable) Monotheism and its Discontents,” given by Gore Vidal at the Lowell Lecture, Harvard University, on April 20, 1992. HU Song

Everyone is invited to participate in a HU Song held on the third Saturday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a fellowship time.

The HU Song is a contemplative spiritual exercise that helps bring inner peace and more love into your life. It is held at the Spiritual Center (Nicolas Bravo 17, Ajijic). People of all faiths are welcome. The June HU Song is scheduled for Saturday, June 15.  The door is monitored and closed at 10:30 a.m., so be sure to arrive no later than 10:20 a.m.

Presbyterians

Sunday, June 9 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, guest speaker Marvin Golden’s topic will be “How Great is Your God?” using Job 2: 9-10 as his text. If, at some dark period in your life, you could relate to Job’s trials, you will surely find this interesting! Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. Lakeside Presbyterian Church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera, just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant. The Second Sunday Lunch potluck follows the service.

Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will observe the Third Sunday after Pentecost on June 9 by celebrating the Holy Eucharist Rite II at 9:30 a.m. in the Little Chapel by the Lake, Carretera 10, Chula Vista, Ajijic. Father Danny Borkowski’s sermon topic is “Compassion,” based on Luke 7:11-17. Christ Church and the Little Chapel by the Lake share a common fellowship time between their two services in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel from about 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m
