Dine with the Shrine
A surprise Dine with the Shrine event sponsored by the Lake Chapala Shrine Club will be held on Tuesday, August 15 at Restaurant Hacienda de Don Pedro on the south side of the Carretera just west of Ajijic. Special lunches/dinners will be served from noon to 8 p.m.
The host, Pedro Arellano Arroyo, has two great entrees planned at a cost of only 130 pesos, and both include a glass of red or white wine. A salad is also included with both entrée selections.
One entrée is a grilled beef fillet with baked potato and choice of vegetable. The other is grilled salmon with fine herbs, accompanied with fettuccine.
Arellano will provide for your listening pleasure, live, quietly elegant music from 4-7 p.m. The tip, drinks and dessert are not included in the dinner price.
The restaurant will donate 100 percent of special lunch/dinner sales to the Lake Chapala Shrine Club to benefit their activities, most importantly helping children at lakeside with their medical needs.
The Shrine Club’s Transportation Fund is getting uncomfortably low, hence this surprise Dine with the Shrine. Photos of the children who have been helped will be on show at the event.

In the past seven years the Lake Chapala Shrine Club has helped over 850 children at a cost of 1,535,800 pesos. The community’s continuing support of the Dine with the Shrine program, and other fund-raising events, is greatly appreciated.

British Society
The next meeting of the Lakeside British Society should be a happy one, following the the birth of the first son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. He becomes third in line to the British throne. The baby George Alexander Luis was born July 22 at 16:24 BST, weighing 8lb 6oz, at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, West London.
Judy King, long time Lakeside resident, writer and editor of the Lake Chapala Review, will review her new book “Living at Lake Chapala” at the meeting on Saturday, August 3, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic.
The menu is a choice of chicken with all the fixings or sea bass with vegetables. A large salad will be available for 80 pesos. Dessert is carrot cake.

Genealogy
The Genealogy Forum will hold its monthly meeting on July 29, 2 p.m. in the Sala at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).
The program for July will be a webinar and discussion about the quest for British ancestors. It seems like most expats at Lakeside have at least some British ancestors.
The Forum will look at resources, online sites, and other techniques for finding these elusive relatives. They meet on the last Monday of every month. Everyone, whether a member of LCS or not, is welcome to attend.
Bazaar
Several local charities will participate in a community bazaar on Sunday. July 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Flora Exotica, across from Centro Laguna Mall. There’s always lots of neat stuff from antiques, to tools, electronics, clothing for men, women and kids, as well as handmade items. Lots of new treasures. No reasonable offer refused. Stop by and say hello to “Harry” the Crested Cara-cara, courtesy of Lori and Vern Geiger’s Lakeside Wildlife Rescue and Rehab. Garden party for kids
A Mexican garden party in support of the Niños de Chapala y Ajijic (NCA) scholarship program is slated for Friday, August 2, from 2 to 5 p.m., hosted by NCA President Sharon Ford and fund-raising chairman Dave Paterson. The event will be set on the grounds of the couple’s Chapala home, at Avenida Las Redes 180. Mexican music and an all-you-can eat taco bar is included in the 125 pesos per person admission price. A cash bar with beer, wine and margaritas will be available. Tickets are available at the NCA office, Chacaltita 20-A, Chapala; the Bazar de Los Niños consignment shop at Hidalgo 95-B, Riberas del Pilar opposite 7-Eleven; Diane Pearl Gallery, Ocampo at Colon, Ajijic, and on Fridays at Lake Chapala Society headquarters. Presbyterians
Sunday, July 28 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Pastor Ross Arnold will take as his text Mark 6:45-52. These verses tell the story of a miracle: Jesus walked on water through a storm to reach His disciples in their boat, as it was foundering in violent seas. They were so terrified they did not recognize Him. We wonder: can fear and faith co-exist in the same heart? This miracle is recounted in three Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and John.
Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. Following there is always a time of fellowship and refreshments.
Lakeside Presbyterian Church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera, just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.
Little Chapel
The Little Chapel by the Lake will resume its regular schedule of activities this week. Sunday’s sermon, “Living in the Past,” will be delivered by Rev. Gene Raymer at 11:15 a.m. Following the service the group will enjoy a fellowship lunch together at a local restaurant.
Wednesday afternoon classes will resume next week, and the group will discuss “Does God Ever Get Mad?” and “Does God Change His Mind?” The class is held in the fellowship hall of the church.
Spiritual Living Center
The theme for August is “Happiness.” Reverent Timothy Schubert will present “What Makes You Happy?” at the center’s regular Friday service, 5-6 p.m. A social hour will follow.
A special guest, Miguel Zuleta, will present a Spanish-language workshop entitled “Un Nuevo Comienzo” (A New Beginning) on Sunday, July 28, from 4-6 p.m.
The regular Wednesday class (10:30 a.m.-noon) is Nonviolent Communication with Practitioner Arch Crane, while Thursday’s Discussion Group (10:30 a.m.-noon) deals with the topic “Natural Abundance, Emerson’s Guide to Prosperity.” Feel free to attend any or all activities. St. Andrew’s
Do you have to nag God? That seems to be the message in this week’s reading from Luke’s Gospel. Jesus’s disciples ask Him to teach them to pray, and He answers with what we call the Lord’s prayer. But He doesn’t stop there. He follows up the Padre Nuestro with a very strange story that sounds suspiciously like a rude imposition on hospitality and friendship, and then says that’s how we should pray! “Hang In There!” is the title of the sermon at St. Andrew’s this week that tries to make sense of Jesus’s teaching on prayer. Is it comfortable? Certainly not for the preacher, and probably not for you, either. But to find out if it’s true, you may just have to show up and decide for yourself.
Children are welcome at 9:45 a.m. for the Summer Sunday School, and worship begins at 10 a.m. fterwards there is a time of refreshment, welcome, and fellowship in the Garden. St. Andrew’s is located at San Lucas 19, just a block south of the cCarretera in Riberas del Pilar.
Christ Church Anglican
Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost on July 28 by celebrating the Holy Eucharist Rite II at 9:30 a.m. in the Little Chapel by the Lake, Carretera 10, Chula Vista, Ajijic.
Fr. Danny Borkowski’s sermon topic is “We Need to Talk” based on Luke 11:1-13.
Christ Church and the Little Chapel by the Lake share a common fellowship time between their two services in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel from about 10:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Please join us!
Unitarians
The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 (southwest corner of Santa Clara and Sta. Margarita) in Riberas del Pilar.
On July 28 Kathy Koches will give the talk “UU 101.” This is an overview of Unitarian Universalism for newcomers and a refresher for our current members. A coffee hour will follow the service.
