Canadian Club
Wayne Palfrey will explain the exciting story of the Mexican struggle for Independence at the Canadian Club meeting on Wednesday, September 11 at La Nueva Posada in Ajijic.
Those attending this timely talk should particularly enjoy the fascinating tale of Lake Chapala’s Mezcala Island – a remarkable and romantic story reminiscent of David and Goliath.
The social hour begins at 3 p.m. and the program at 4 p.m. The Canadian Club’s yearly membership fee is 200 pesos and is now due. This includes four 25-peso drink tickets. There is a 50-peso charge for non members.

Conservatives
The Lakeside Conservatives Group (LCG) will meet on Wednesday, September 11, 4 p.m. at Club Exotica above El Jardin Restaurant on the Ajijic plaza.
At the meeting, LCG Program Chair Frank Callom will attempt to dissect the workings of the United Nations sustainable development action plan known as Agenda 21.
The Conservatives say Agenda 21 “has been crafted to look innocuous but, in fact, can devastate freedoms in America and other countries that adopt its principles.”

LCS party
Don’t miss the Monday, September 16 celebration party at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS), presented by the España brothers and Manix Restaurant.
Held on the LCS grounds from 2-5 p.m., this fiesta is a lively, interactive party, picnic and games day for the expat and Mexican communities. The ticket price of 150 pesos includes a globos (balloon) launch, greased pole and sack racing competitions and other activities organized by Ajijic Delegado Hector España. Popular musicians will entertain throughout the day and music will be provided for dancing. A delicious all-you-can-eat Mexican buffet will be prepared and soft beverages and alcoholic drinks will be served at a cash bar.
Children aged ten and under are invited free of charge if accompanied by an adult.

American Legion switch
The American Legion Post Seven in Chapala has traditionally held a collective yard sale/bazaar on the first Friday of every month. They will do so no longer.
Post Seven has decided to move the yard sale/bazaar to the first Saturday of the month, making it easier for people who work to be able to attend. The first one on the new day will be Saturday, September 7.
Vendors from the Monday Market and Farmers’ Market have been invited to participate. Also invited is anyone who would like to sell their goods or products.
The price is 30 pesos per table, on a first-come first-served basis. Tables and chairs are provided. Vendors set up at 8 a.m., and the doors open to the public at 9 a.m.
American Legion Post Seven is located at Morelos 114 in Chapala.
Old-timers give-away
During September, Lucky Dog Rescue and Adoption is offering free adoptions of all dogs that have been at the shelter for six months or more.
Eight male and female dogs, in all sizes, fit this description. All have been spayed or neutered, de-wormed and are current on vaccines. They have all received outstanding veterinary care from the Ladron de Guevara veterinarians.
Many of these dogs arrived at Lucky Dog as puppies last winter and have grown up at the shelter. They get along well with other dogs, are leash trained, and have been taught basic commands such as “sit.” They love people but really want to find a forever home.
Lucky Dog is easy to find – just 2.5 kilometers from Chapala on the road to Mezcala. The shelter is on the right hand side of the road, well before Vista del Lago.
From Chapala take Av. Cristiania (the street that runs in front of the Cruz Roja and Cristiania Park), pass the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center (former train station) and continue straight toward Mezcala.
If you don’t have transportation, call Lucky Dog during business hours at cel. (331)300-1744, and they will either go and get you, or take some dogs for you to see.

Rotary fundraiser
El Perla Negra (Chapala Malecon, on the west side of the pier) will hold a Rotary Independence Day fundraiser on Saturday, September 15 from 6-10 p.m. Includes a Mexican buffet, live entertainment by Carol Bedford and Michael Ritchie, games, prizes and surprises. There will be a cash bar, with the first beverage on the house. Unitarians
The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 (southwest corner of Santa Clara and Sta. Margarita) in Riberas del Pilar. On September 8, Marion Blackmer will give the talk “The Bauhaus: A Light in the Gathering Darkness in Weimar Germany.”
Blackmer will examine the goals and history of this school, whose teachers were among the greatest artists and architects of their time: Kandinsky, Klee, Feininger, Moholy-Nagy, Feininger, Gropius, van der Rohe and others. A coffee hour will follow the service.

Christ Church Anglican
Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost on September 8 by celebrating the Holy Eucharist Rite II at 9:30 a.m. in the Little Chapel by the Lake (Carretera 10, Chula Vista). Father Danny Borkowski’s sermon topic is “3 Conditions” based on Luke 14:25-33.
Christ Church and the Little Chapel by the Lake share a joint fellowship in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel between their two services, from about 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
Deacon Rob Wells is leading a Bible Study on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel by the Lake. Each session lasts about an hour. This week’s session is a continuation of a look at the Gospel of Matthew, a subject which began three weeks ago. Deacon Wells is using the Jerusalem Bible as his principal study text and commentary. It is not necessary to have attended any session in order to take part.
There are two important events coming up. On September 15, Deacon Wells will baptize Dan Cross during the service of Holy Eucharist. On September 22, Christ Church will hold their service in conjunction with La Sagrada Familia Mission in Mazamitla. The convoy will leave from Farmacias Guadalajara at 9 a.m. A potluck luncheon will follow after the service, which takes place at noon.

Reverend Tim Schubert presents “Becoming Who You Really Are” on Friday, September 13, 5-6 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living (Nicolas Bravo 17). The Nonviolent Communication Class takes place on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The Unfettered Soul discussion group on Thursday is preceded by an optional meditation from 10 a.m. to 10:20 p.m., followed by the discussion from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

St. Andrew’s
Would you want Jesus to be the Pastor of your Church? Be careful how you answer, because it’s for certain that every week He would tell you some things the previous pastor never dared to say. For example, He would insist that following Him means to hate your parents, your children, and even your life! That’s what we hear from Him this week, and it’s truly one of the hardest of His sayings ever recorded. This Sunday’s sermon at St. Andrew’s – “Jesus: A Poor Pastor?” – will ask us to wrestle with the implications of such an outlandish statement, as well as our inability to live up to it. It’s challenging words like this that make worship such an essential part of what it means to be a person of faith. Our children’s Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m., worship follows at 10 a.m., and a time of welcome, fellowship, and refreshment in the Garden concludes our morning together. This week, the men of St. Andrew’s will gather for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning at Min Wah restaurant in Ajijic; all are invited and welcome. Presbyterians
Last Sunday, Pastor Ross Arnold of Lakeside Presbyterian Church began a new series of sermons, based on Bob Goff’s “Love Does,” a New York Times best-seller since July 2013. Goff is something of a legend. He “teaches to the soul” and helps us live his motto, “Be Awesome.” Goff says his family has found seemingly impossible dreams come true, fueled by the energy of love.
Taking I Corinthians 1:18-21 as his text, on Sunday, September 8 Pastor Ross will speak on the values the world deems important, as opposed to those that Christians should make their first priorities. First, they must be for something, not simply against something, be sure they are for the right thing, then plant their flag and not retreat.
Hear Pastor Ross’ insights, “Love Does: What Are You For?” and be ready for a thought-provoking morning: When Love Does, Life Gets Interesting!
