Chapala’s Love in Action (LIA) Children’s Home was featured in the September 22 transmission of El Lenguaje del Corazon (Language of the Heart), a prime time Sunday evening program aired on Radio Mujer 1040 AM, a Guadalajara radio station focusing on issues of interest to female listeners. LIA founder Anabel Frutos and administrator Dalia Zepeda took part in a 60-minute interview to talk about the shelter’s roots, ongoing services and future projects.
Love in Action currently has 34 homeless children under its care through placement by Jalisco child welfare agencies. The youngsters are innocent victims of extreme poverty, broken homes, abandonment or neglect, and in many cases, physical and emotional abuse. LIA offers them a safe, stable and loving environment to grow and heal.
In addition to providing the basics of housing, nourishment and clothing, Love in Action attends to the children’s medical, psychological, spiritual and educational needs. Since many arrive at the facility with no prior formal schooling, a primary level home school program has been put into operation this term to help the kids flourish intellectually as they overcome the academic deficiencies, stigmatization and self-esteem issues they commonly suffer.
The radio program helped LIA get exposure to a wide Guadalajara audience with the aim of drumming up new sponsors, supporters and volunteers from beyond the lakeside area.

Health Day
The next Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Health Day is set for Wednesday, October 9, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The following shots are available at these prices:
Flu: 280 pesos
Pneumonia: 350 pesos (shots are for five years and may be taken together with the flu shot)
Hepatitis A/B Combo, series of three: 700 pesos each, 2,100 pesos in total (it is very important to complete the entire series. The second shot must be applied one month later and the booster after another six months)
Typhoid: 500 pesos (a three-year shot)
Tetanus: 100 pesos
Yellow Fever: 700 pesos
Payment for these shots can be made on the day they are administered at the nurse’s station.

Canadian Thanksgiving
The Canadian Club will celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving with a turkey dinner with all the trimmings on Monday, October 14 at La Nueva Posada in Ajijic.
A social hour, with a no-host bar, begins at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. The newly appointed Canadian Consul Francis Uy will be attending.
Tickets are available at the front desk of the La Nueva Posada, Ajijic for 270 pesos, including tax and tip. This event is sellout every year.
British Society
The Lakeside British Society will meet on Saturday, October 5, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57, Ajijic.
There will be an open discussion in which members will recount their recent experiences with obtaining temporary and or permanent residency.
The menu is a choice of pork ribs or sea bass. A small salad is included. Dessert is carrot cake. The cost is 120 pesos, including tip. A large salad will be available for 80 pesos.

Charity bazaar
Head over to the charity bazaar/yard sale at Flora Exotica – across from Centro Laguna Mall – on Sunday, September 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (ish).
Stop by and say hello to “Niño the McCaw,” or have your photo taken with an adorable rescued Chinchilla.
Several charities will be participating. They always have lots of new treasures and if you’re looking for something in particular and don’t see it, ask one of the charities. They may have it even if it’s not on display at the sale. No reasonable offer is refused.
LCS bus trip
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) bus trip on Thursday, October 3 will head to to the Galerias Mall in Guadalajara. This covered mall boasts many fine stores and food outlets, including Liverpool, Best Buy, the Home Store, Sears, Outback Steakhouse and Applebees. Adjoining the mall there is a Costco, Sams, Walmart and Mega.
The bus leaves Ajijic at 9:30 a.m. and returns at 4 p.m. The price is 200 pesos. Sign up at LCS, Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
McAllen bound
The LCS trip to McAllen, Texas will be from Sunday, November 3 to Thursday, November 7. The price is 6,000 pesos (462 dollars) for double occupancy and 7,500 pesos (577 dollars) for single occupancy. It includes round-trip transportation, tips for the driver and a three-night stay at the Hampton Inn with breakfast included.
A 1,500 pesos non-refundable deposit is required. The balance is due by October 18. Travelers must have a valid passport and the correct Mexican documentation (temporary, permanent visa etc.). A copy of both must be presented with the final payment.

Genealogy Forum
The Genealogy Forum will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, September 30 at 2 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society Sala.
With more and more interest in genealogy and family history, a wealth of new and improved online sources have emerged. The group will talk about podcasts, webcasts, wikis, YouTube, blogs, online courses and more. One of these may be just the thing to jump start your genealogy research or help you deal with a brick wall.
This presentation will be a greatly expanded update for one given several years ago. The Forum is open to everyone whether new to genealogy or an old hand.

Church-in-a-box
On Sunday, September 22, Christ Church cancelled their service at Lakeside to take a “church-in-a-box” and a “moveable feast” to Mazamitla and the Anglican Mission La Sagrada Familia (The Holy Family), which is currently without a priest. Approximately 30 people attended the service which was held in the carport of a home during a rainstorm. Ximena, the girl who wants a tumor removed from her face, was one of the many children in attendance. Rev. Danny Borkowski was the celebrant with the Rev. Deacon Rob Wells and the Very Rev. Sandy Olson (a visiting priest from the Ascension Alliance) assisting. Lakeside Presbyterian teenagers Acacia and Nayeli served as translators for the sermon and did an admirable job.
Christ Church wishes to express their thanks to the Little Chapel by the Lake for their help in raising funds for Ximena’s surgery and to Lakeside Presbyterian Church and La Ola Casa Hogar for providing translators for this outing.
Christ Church would welcome additional ecumenical and/or other Anglican congregations in joining in this endeavor.
St. Andrew’s Anglican
Who are “they” for you? When you build a wall or draw a line in the sand, who is on the other side? How much distance – physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual distance – do you like to have between yourself and those who are “other” for you? These are some of the uncomfortable questions posed to us this week in Jesus’s familiar parable of the rich man (Dives) and Lazarus. The sermon – “The Chasms We Create” – asks the additional question: if I am not Dives, and if I am not Lazarus, who am I in this parable, and what is God telling me?
Week after week it’s the goal of worship at St. Andrew’s to help us deal with questions like that in the spiritual journey on which each of us is traveling. That journey begins with Sunday School at 9:45 a.m., followed by worship at 10 a.m., and concludes with a time of fellowship and welcome in the garden. St. Andrew’s Anglican Church is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.
Unitarians
Unitarians The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita 113, in Riberas del Pilar (a half block north of the Carretera).
On Sunday, September 29, Frank Howell’s presentation will be “Early Christianity: From Gender Equality to Misogyny in 300 years.” The early Christian communities were often led by women. Little Chapel
The Little Chapel by the Lake will continue their regular schedule this week. The Sunday morning refreshment time will be shared with the Christ Church Anglican Fellowship at 10:45 a.m. and the regular morning worship service will follow at 11:15 a.m. Rev. Gene Raymer’s sermon topic will be “Forever.”
“We talk about ‘Forever Stamps’ and say ‘Diamonds are forever’ but only God’s reign as King is forever,” says Rev. Raymer. Following Sunday’s service, members of the congregation will join for fellowship over lunch at a local restaurant.
Sunday, October 6 will be a special day at the Little Chapel. Tony Rohas will be giving a presentation of the missionary work he has been doing. A pot luck luncheon will follow the service and Tony will be available to answer questions during that time.

Christ Church Anglican
Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost on September 29 by celebrating the Holy Eucharist Rite II at 9:30 a.m. in the Little Chapel by the Lake (Carreterra 10, Chula Vista). Deacon Rob Wells’ sermon topic is “The Poor Rich Man,” based on Luke 16: 19-31. Christ Church and the Little Chapel by the Lake are resuming their joint fellowship time this week in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel in between their two services, from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
Deacon Wells is leading a Bible study at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays in the Fellowship Hall at the Little Chapel by the Lake. Each session lasts about one hour. This week’s session is a continuation of a look at the Gospel of Matthew, which began five weeks ago. Deacon Wells is using the Jerusalem Bible as his study text and commentary. It is not necessary to have attended any sessions in order to take part. All are welcome.
Center for Spiritual Living
The theme for October at the Center for Spiritual Living is “Harvest” and the Friday celebrations will reflect this. On October 4, from 5-6 p.m., the Reverend Tim Schubert explores “Claiming Your Good.” A social hour will follow.
“The Four Agreements” class continues on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The Thursday discussion group is “The Unfettered Soul” at the same time, with an optional meditation from 10-10:20 p.m. The screening at the Sacred Cinema on Sunday, October 20, 4 p.m. will be “Defending Your Life” with Meryl Streep and Albert Brooks. Popcorn is provided but bring your own drinks.
