Presbyterians

Pastor Ross Arnold of Lakeside Presbyterian Church has launched a new series of sermons for November: “Longing for Home.”  On Sunday, November 10, as part of this series, he will speak on “Finding the Balance,” taking Luke 6:29-31 as his text.

This text is one of those sometimes referred to the “hard sayings of Jesus.”  Even a cursory reading of these well-loved Beatitudes tells us why:  according to many social norms, certain behaviors are accepted, even rewarded.  But Jesus unequivocally puts those assumptions to rest, what He commands is infinitely more difficult than simply doing “what will get us by.”  How difficult it is to  “love our enemies ... do good to those who hate us ... bless those who curse  us ... pray for those who mistreat us!”   The heart of Jesus’ teaching is love, He understands how tough it is to swim against the current, but He assures us that if we follow these “hard sayings,” our reward will be great.

Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m.  Following the service, there is fellowship and refreshments.  Lakeside Presbyterian Church is in Riberas del Pilar, on the mountain side of the Carretera, just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

Deacon Rob Wells leads a Bible study on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel by the Lake. Each session lasts one hour. This week’s session will be a continuing look at the gospel of St. Matthew. Deacon Wells is using the Jerusalem Bible as his principal study text and commentary. It is not necessary to have attended a session before in order to participate

Little Chapel

The Little Chapel by the Lake, an interdenominational congregation, will meet on Sunday, November 3.  A pre-service refreshment period will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by the worship service at 11:15 a.m. Following Rev. Gene Raymer’s sermon, “Ten Words,” the congregation will observe communion. After the service, members of the congregation will meet at Tabarka’s  for a fellowship lunch.

The Little Chapel by the Lake is located just east of the Chula Vista Golf Club and welcomes all Christians.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Here we are more than five months away from Easter, but this Sunday at St. Andrew’s Anglican you can listen in on a conversation  about resurrection.  Actually, it’s more of a word game, an attempt by His adversaries to trap Jesus and exalt themselves.  But maybe it’s a good time, removed from the sentimentality of the holiday, to look at what we believe or don’t believe about physical, bodily resurrection from death.  Actually, which side of the argument we come down on has more to do with what we believe about God than about resurrection.

“God of the Living” is this Sunday’s sermon title, and while Fr. Winston gives no proof or easy answer, he does challenge us to think more clearly about what we really believe.  Worship at St. Andrew’s begins for children at 9:45 a.m., continues for everyone else at 10 a.m., and concludes with a post-worship time of fellowship and welcome in the garden.  And this week, for the first time since the renovation project began, the monthly breakfast for the men of St. Andrew’s will return to the church at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. All are invited and welcome.
