Guadalajara-born boxing WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez faces WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout on Saturday, April 20 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The fight will be for the unification Ring Light Middleweight belt.
Both fighters are undefeated in their professional careers. Alvarez (40-0-1, 30KOs) will count on the bulk of support of a possible sellout crowd of 40,000. Trout (26-0, 14KOs) won a unanimous decision over Canelo’s brother, Rigoberto Alvarez, in February 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico,
“Without a doubt, I’m going to win,” says Alvarez. “This fight is personal because Trout beat my brother. I was there and felt helpless. From that moment I wanted to fight Trout. When the day comes, I’ll enjoy every moment of it.”
Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who has often been accused of building Alvarez’s career on weak opponents, says the fight with Trout will be a coming of age moment for the 22-year-old. “(The fight) will show the public that Canelo is a true champion who wants to face the best in the world.”
Many boxing fans had hoped Alvarez would fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 14. That match-up is still in the cards, but probably not before 2014. Another possibility for the popular September boxing date (a tradition around the time of Mexico’s independence celebrations) could see Canelo up against top-rated Miguel Angel Cotto at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
