Government subsidizes bus drivers to avoid conflict during campaigns

Depending on their class of vehicle, each bus driver will receive from 1,200 to 2,600 pesos per month for a maximum of 11 months. This equates to a total of 13,200 to 28,600 pesos per driver.

Jalisco’s bus drivers had been demanding a fare increase but this would not have gone down well with the state’s many commuters. Nor, however, would a drivers’ strike, so Gonzalez was left with little option but to offer short-term subsidies in order to ensure tranquility on Jalisco’s streets.

Drivers must apply by May 16, but those with a history of involvement in fatal accidents will be ineligible for the subsidy.

Federation of University Students (FEU) President Marco Antonio Nuñez Becerra warned this week that students from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) would oppose any hike in bus tariffs, heaping further pressure on the state government not to accede to the demands of bus drivers.
