Woman slain at Chapalita taco joint

The body of Maria del Socorro Hernandez Xochitl was discovered by a co-worker in the kitchen of the establishment on 12 de Diciembre at La Aurora, one block from Avenida Tepeyac.

Hernandez died from severe stab wounds to the head, back and chest. Beside her, police found a 30-centimeter knife covered in blood.

The Jalisco Attorney General’s Office (PGJEJ) said specialists from the Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences (IJCF) would determine whether the killing should be considered a case of femicide.

Earlier this year, Jalisco became the seventh Mexican state to treat femicide as a distinct crime and a more serious form of murder, with a sterner punishment. Femicide is defined the act of killing a woman, as by a domestic partner, someone known to the victim or a member of a criminal enterprise.

According to the IJCF, 124 women have been murdered in Jalisco so far this year.
