City’s motorbike bandits target cell phone drivers

In recent weeks, several drivers have reported being the victims of “drive-by” thieves on motorbikes.

The thieves – referred to as “motoratones” – target drivers who are chatting on their cell phones, often in their left hands and with their windows wound down.

They usually work in pairs and wait until the target pulls up at a red light. Their maneuver is simple but effective. The bike up draws close to the driver talking on the phone and the back seat assailant swiftly leans in the open window, snatches the phone and the pair roar away.

If necessary the accomplice will get off the bike to steal the phone. People talking on the phone in passenger seats have also been targeted. The thieves have tended to prefer late model cars, presumably believing the occupants will have more expensive cell phones.

Arrest

On Tuesday, social media sites were buzzing following the posting of a video showing an assault by motoratones at the intersection of Federalismo and Hidalgo. The license plates of the red-and-white Yamaha bike could be clearly seen and police wasted no time in tracking down the culprits.

Within hours officers had arrested a 19-year-old man riding a motorbike in the eastern part of the metro area, apparently under the influence of inhalants and in the possession of marijuana. The victim of the assault identified the suspect, who was remanded in custody. He was also wanted in connection with a recent armed assault on a furniture store.

Most of the reported incidents have occurred in the Guadalajara city center.
