Eyeball to eyeball with Mexican hero

The imposing mural of Mexico’s Independence champion Miguel Hidalgo holding the “torch of freedom” that graces the stairwell of the Jalisco Government Palace in downtown Guadalajara

is undergoing some retouching for the first time in two decades.

Six experienced restorers are working on the famous mural, one of several painted by acclaimed artist Jose Clemente Orozco in Guadalajara between 1936 and 1939.
