City bikers can take the train

Travelers on Guadalajara’s Tren Ligero (subway) network are now able to travel on the trains with their bicycles on weekdays and Saturdays – albeit only at certain hours of the day – and also leave them padlocked at cycle ports recently installed at all the stations.

The initiative, called ProBici, is part of the state government’s plan to promote non-motorized transport in the metropolitan area.

Many of the cycle ports are situated to one end of the Tren Ligero platforms.

The new installations bring the total number of bicycle lock up points at the city’s Tren Ligero and Macrobus stations to 1,470.

Metro-area BRT Metrobuses will also provide space at the front of their units for cyclists to secure their bicycles.

Up until now, cyclists have only been allowed to take their bikes on the subway network on Sundays between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m., during the Via RecreActiva car-free activity.

The new hours will be Monday to Friday, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Saturdays from 7 to 10 a.m. and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cyclists are asked to use the last two carriages, if possible.

There will be no charge to use the cycle ports but Tren Ligero (Siteur) administrators say they will not be financially responsible for full or partial loss of bikes.
