Breastfeeding moms stage sit-in protest

More than 100 moms staged a sit-in at the plush Galerias mall in Guadalajara to protest the discrimination mothers frequently suffer when they breastfeed their babies in public.

The mothers decided to stage the protest as an act of solidarity for Catalina Torres, who was asked to leave the same mall while breastfeeding her baby on May 10,  Mothers Day in Mexico.

This time, security guards just stood and watched as the mothers breastfed the babies in unison.

The protest, which was organized through Facebook, was designed to send a “message” to “institutions, businesses and civil society” that mothers who breastfeed their babies will not tolerate harassment or intimidation.

Organizers said they approached the administrators of Plaza Galerias to ask for their cooperation before staging the protest.

None of the mothers was approached during the sit-in, or asked to lave the mall. The protest broke up in an orderly fashion.
