Zika cases up to nine

A second pregnant woman has been diagnosed with the Zika virus in Jalisco, state health secretary Antonio Cruces Mada announced Wednesday. The woman, from Tlaquepaque, is in stable condition and is being constantly monitored, he said. The total number of Zika cases in Jalisco is now nine. All but one have been reported in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

Car theft havens

The Jalisco Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has named the three most popular neighborhoods in Guadalajara for automobile theft: Paseos del Sol, La Estancia and Lagos del Country. These three colonias have reported 32, 27 and 26 incidents of car theft, respectively, between January and April.

Unemployment down

The official unemployment rate in Jalisco has fallen from 5.2 to 3.8 percent over the course of the past 12 months, according to the National Statistics Institute (INEGI).  The number of new subscribers in the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS) – a reliable indicator of job creation – has risen by 41,000.

Cops kicked out

Fifty Guadalajara municipal police officers have been removed from their jobs and are under investigation for possible links to criminal activity, Guadalajara police chief Salvador Caro announced this week.  He said he had been informed by federal investigators that some the officers in question are suspected of providing protection to small-time drug dealers in neighborhoods of the city such as Analco and Santuario. Caro bemoaned the fact in the six years prior to the current city administration, municipal police officers had been “at the beck and call” of criminal organizations.

Massive act of faith

Guadalajara’s Colonia Hermosa Provincia will be inundated with the faithful from Saturday as Luz del Mundo church members from around the world converge to their yearly Holy Convocation. Church representatives say half a million people are expected form 53 nations.  The evangelical denomination, that describes itself as the restoration of primitive Christianity, boasts of having some seven million adherents worldwide.
