Famed archaeologist remembered

Friends of the late archaeologist Phil Weigand gathered at the Jalisco Culture Secretariat building in downtown Guadalajara September 9 to pay tribute to “the man who discovered the lost civilization of Teuchitlán,” symbolized by the Guachimontones circular pyramids.

Weigand passed away on September 3, 2011. The Jalisco State Choir sang several of the archaeologist’s favorite pieces and filmmakers Daniel and Pascual Aldana presented a lively video consisting of never before published excerpts from interviews with Weigand, his colleagues and friends.

The documentary is entitled “Guachando Montones con Weigand,” a play on words alluding to the famed Guachimontones and perhaps to Weigand’s noticeable U.S. accent when speaking Spanish.

Weigand’s wisdom and kindness were recalled by his frequent co-author Dr. Eduardo Williams and by his widow Maestra Acelia.
