Assaults on bank customers on the rise

A greenhorn thief who tried to assault a man who had just withdrawn 200 pesos ($US11) from an ATM ended up shooting himself in the leg and is now in police custody.

The gunman and an unarmed female accomplice confronted their target two blocks from the bank’s ATM in Guadalajara’s Colonia Monumental.

Several passersby quickly realized what was happening and attempted to restrain the assailant.

A struggle ensued, during which the attacker discharged a single bullet into his leg before he was tackled to the ground and restrained.  Police arrived shortly thereafter and took him to a first-aid post for treatment.

More than 300 asaltos conejeros (assaults on bank customers) have taken place in Jalisco this year, according to Attorney General Eduardo Almageur.

He said his agency has been collaborating with financial institutions to try and reduce these high numbers, and stressed that proof of collusion between bank staff and criminals will result in the immediate closure of branches.
