World’s most obese man arrives in Guadalajara for treatment

A 32-year-old man from Aguascalientes who weighs over 500 kilograms and has been described as possibly the heaviest person in the world is receiving treatment for his obesity at a Zapopan hospital.

pg8“Juan Pedro” has spent the past six years in bed “without being able to move,” reads a press release from his consulting doctor.

His excess weight has provoked a range of complications, including type-2 diabetes, hypertension and chronic pulmonary disease, according to bariatric surgeon Jose Antonio Castañeda, who runs GastricBypassMexico in Guadalajara.

Castañeda says the treatment will last around six months and “culminate in surgery” to “definitively reduce his weight.”

The GastricBypassMexico website notes that Castañeda has successfully treated more than 8,000 obese patients.  In October last year, he performed bariatric surgery on 37-year-old

Andres Moreno from Ciudad Obregon, who at one time weighed 435 kilograms.  Unfortunately, he suffered a fatal heart attack two months later while recovering back in his hometown.
Juan Pedro was brought to Guadalajara in a specially adapted van. He is being treated at the Jardines de Guadalupe hospital on Avenida Manuel Clouthier.
