Emissions testing program beefs up

As of next year, traffic cops will have the power to tow vehicles that are not displaying a current emissions check (verificacion vehicular) sticker.

New regulations due to come into force January 1 will also see tougher fines for car owners who fail to get their vehicles checked once a year at registered agencies and talleres (workshops), and for cars that are “visibly polluting.”

There will, however, be an “amnesty” for the first three months of 2017, with vehicles with license plates ending “1” and “2” having until the end of March to be tested, rather than only in January or February.
