Baring all for a noble cause

On Saturday, June 17, the city’s easily-scandalized citizens will want to pay attention to where they direct their gaze.

For, you see, the World Naked Bike Ride has returned to the city.  It’s mission: to terrorize churchgoing citizenry with brazenly exposed nipples, butt cheeks, and other anatomical bits and pieces which outside of the bedroom, nudist beach or pornography film set are normally concealed beneath one’s choice of sown fabric.

In 2004, the Naked Bike Ride began in British Columbia, the creation of activist and writer Conrad Schmidt, who conceived of it as both a demonstration against petroleum dependency and a celebration of body positivity.

The Guadalajara iteration has been going strong since 2011.  The organizers echo Schmidt’s conception of the event’s raison d’etre in their website’s manifesto, claiming to “raise awareness of our over-dependence on oil and the indiscriminate use of the automobile and its resultant negative impact on the environment.”

The event kicks off at Parque Jose Clemente Orozco, Avenida Vallarta and Los Arcos, at 4 p.m.  The event is free, and kids are welcome.  Sunscreen and water are recommended.
