Friends, neighbors and countrymen have a ball at Canada Day and July 4th fetes in Mexico

While expatriate North Americans may have a lonely time celebrating their patriotic holidays in some far flung corners of the world, those living in Mexico know how to throw a good party.

They sing “O Canada” or the “Star Spangled Banner,” salute the flag and then get on with the feasting, dancing, chatting and laughing that characterize a good fiesta anywhere.

While fireworks are out of the question here, flying the flag is de rigeur. And they always fly the flag of their hosts and neighbors, the Mexican citizens who have opened their doors and hearts to their north-of-the-border neighbors now resident in their country. Canadians at Lakeside pulled out all the stops this year for their 150th commemoration of Confederation;and U.S. citizens gathered in Guadalajara and at Lakeside for multiple Independence Day parties, sometimes joined by their Canadian cousins and Mexican friends.
