Splashy but pricey new aquarium offers range of discounts

Guadalajara’s new aquarium, adjoining the Parque Alcalde, Acuario Michin, has introduced some discounted prices just in time for the school vacation.

pg5cThe new attraction has garnered criticism since its opening last year for its high admission prices.  The aquarium’s director has defended the ticket cost of 199 pesos for adults and 120 pesos for children under 12 as fair, given the quality of the installation and marine exhibits.

Two discounts are now offered. One allows entry on Saturdays and Sundays, between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., at a cost of 149 pesos (adults) and 90 pesos (children) – equivalent to savings of 50 and 30 pesos respectively.

The other allows entry to the aquarium Monday through Friday after 6 p.m. for 109 pesos (adults) and 66 pesos (children) – 90 and 54 pesos less than the regular fee.  This discount, however, will give visitors just one hour to browse the exhibits, as the aquarium closes at 7 p.m. on weekdays.

Aquarium Director Paulina Balmontin says the discounts have no expiration date and attendance figures will be analyzed to see if the measure can be introduced on a permanent basis.

Acuario Michin’s regular hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.  The aquarium is located at Mariano de la Bárcena 990, corner of Av. de los Maestros. Call (33) 1644-9910.
