Legendary singer honored with statue

A statue of celebrated Jalisco ranchero singer Vicente Fernandez, which was unveiled last weekend in Guadalajara’s Plaza de los Mariachis, has had quite the baptism of fire.

Fernandez, 79, was on hand for the unveiling of the new bronze effigy, commissioned in honor of his 50 years in show business.

The only problem?

The statue bears scant resemblance to the illustrious crooner.  Many onlookers couldn’t hide their surprise, and while Fernandez smiled and joked – and even sang “Mujeres Divinas” after the crowd’s pleading – throughout the ceremonies, some local officials appeared rather embarrassed.
