Provincial towns pursue Day of the Dead limelight

Two towns within a short drive of Guadalajara and Chapala are fighting for the honor of erecting the tallest catrina this year.

pg5aA popular symbol of the Day of the Dead festivity, catrinas are female skeletons dressed in elegant clothing, and serve as a satirical reminder of the equalizing nature of death.

In what has become a tradition, Zapotlanejo—located 20 miles west of the metropolitan area—will once again install a giant Catrina in the center of the town. This year’s character will be an escaramuza, one of the talented female riders who participate in the spectacular equestrian activity known as Charreria.

Fashion designer Rocío Ruvalcaba, the creator of the catrina, is being aided by dozens of helpers to get the 25-meter-tall figure ready for her unveiling on Sunday, October 29.  It will stay up through November 19.
