Dog killer goes to jail

In the first-ever ruling of its kind, a Jalisco judge has sentenced a man to 19 months in prison for suffocating a dog to death.

The incident occurred in the Jacaranda subdivision of Zapopan in April of this year and was witnessed by neighbors who contacted police to report the offense.

According to a press release issued this week by the Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office (FE), Luis Ramón “R” came out of his house with a rope that he tied around the neck of a mixed-breed dog named Pardo. Neighbors implored him to release the dog, but he lifted the canine into the air, taking it inside his house where it subsequently died of suffocation.

In addition to the prison term, Luis Ramón “R” will have to pay a fine of 18,000 pesos, plus compensation to the dog’s owner.
