Thanksgiving dinner
Don’t forget that the American Society of Jalisco (AMOSC) holds a Grand Reopening Party at its clubhouse in Guadalajara’s Colonia Chapalita on Saturday, November 18, from 4 to 8 p.m., and its traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, November 23.
The meal will consist of turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, apple/sweet potato compote, green beans and pumpkin pie. Cost: 400 pesos for adults, 200 pesos for children aged from 6 to 12 (under 6’s free), to be paid for in cash at the clubhouse, Avenida San Francisco 3332. Call 331-121-2395 for reservations.
Books in English
Looking for some unique used books in English? A vendor going under the business name “The Last Page” is selling a range of unique used books in English at the 13th edition of the Guadalajara Used and Antique Book Fair (Feria del Libro Usado y Antiguo) in the city center. This vendor purchased the entire stock belonging to Gerry Smith, the former proprietor of the now-closed La Perla Bookstore on Pedro Moreno in Colonia Americana, who passed away about a year ago. The Book Fair is currently being held under the arches of the Guadalajara Palacio Municipal, which is catty-corner to the Cathedral. The fair has around 40 vendors in total and will be open daily through Sunday, November 19, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Revolution Day
Mexican Revolution Day is Monday, November 20 and a national holiday, when all schools, government offices, banks, diplomatic missions and many stores will close. Supermarkets will stay open.
Discount weekend
El Buen Fin, Mexico’s answer to Black Friday in the United States, runs from Friday, November 17 through Monday, November 20 (Revolution Day, a national holiday), when tens of thousands of businesses and services will be offering discounts ranging anywhere from 10 to 60 percent. Expect shopping malls in Guadalajara to be filled to the max through the long weekend and parking spaces at a premium. Discounts can be found both in-person at retail outlets, or on websites. Service providers such as airlines, gyms, funeral homes and many others will also offer enticing discounts.
