GDL council trying to reduce motorcycle accidents

Last year, motorbikes were involved in 47 percent of all accidents that resulted in either injuries or deaths in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, according to Guadalajara municipal government statistics.

In total, 33 percent (71 people) of all road fatalities in Guadalajara in 2022 were motorcyclists.

In a bid to reduce these numbers, Guadalajara authorities have started a campaign aimed at getting motorbike drivers to lower their speeds, stop the practice of weaving in between cars, and wear helmets.

Carlos Soto Morfín, director of Mobility in the Guadalajara government, said reasonable speeds are 50 kilometers an hour on main roads and 30 kilometers an hour on secondary roads. He noted that at times motorcyclists have been detected riding at fast as 140 kilometers an hour.

The campaign will last three weeks and include spots aired on radio and television. Following the campaign, surveys will be carried out to determine its effectiveness, Soto said.

This initiative is a collaboration between the Guadalajara City Council and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
