In the autumn of 2021, with Guadalajara still struggling in the pandemic, a young Mexican-American who had just relocated here from Portland, Oregon, decided to try to make her literary habit less costly.
So Angela Fuentes, a young mother whose two children, 6 and 8 at the time, shared her interest in reading, started a Facebook page to advertise books she wanted to give away and to find other readers desiring the same thing.
“I have a huge home library,” she explained. “I read six to 10 books a month. I thought there must be other people like me, and why are we all paying top prices to Amazon Mexico?”
And so began Book Swap GDL, which now has over 200 young and old members and still does book exchanging via Facebook, but has blossomed to include regular meetings and special themed events with delicious food and drink. The group has few rules except for “No reselling,” Fuentes said.
