Children’s cancer charity to open third GDL shelter

Nariz Roja (Red Nose), the Guadalajara-based charity that supports children with cancer, has managed to raise 7.3 million pesos (US$426,000) needed to complete the purchase of a property to house its third shelter in the city.

Children will be able to stay in the house while they receive treatment in the city.

According to Alejandro Barbosa, the director of Nariz Roja, the state Livestock Union (Union Ganadera Regional de Jalisco) came through at the last minute with a big donation just days before the contract for buying the property had to be signed.

The property is located five minutes away from the Juan I. Menchaca Civil New Civil Hospital, which has one of the most up-to-date children’s cancer departments on its seventh and eighth floors.  It will be called La Casa de Darinka, in memory of a girl who battled one of the most aggressive cancers in children but despite the prognosis, never gave up.

The new house is expected to be ready for use in May.
