New stretch of GDL-PV highway may open in time for Easter exodus

Reports suggest that the eagerly awaited new section of the Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta “Vía Corta” (Short Route) running between Compostela and Las Varas in the state of Nayarit has been completed by the constructors and is currently undergoing inspection by federal authorities prior to its opening, possibly by the last week of March.

pg1bThe 32-kilometer stretch of autopista (toll road) cuts through some of the most complicated mountain terrain along the entire 187-kilometer route from the Jalisco capital to the coastal resort. Delays in finishing this section have mostly been caused by the very tricky engineering challenges involved.

When this section of highway opens, only the unfinished stretch linking the La Cruz de Huanacaxtle-Bucerias interchange with the Puerto Vallarta Airport will remain. Once that part is finished, seamless driving from Guadalajara to Vallarta will become a reality, bringing an end to a project that has spanned more than three presidential administrations and taken more than 12 years to complete.
