New ‘Chair Law’

February 20, the Mexican Senate approved the “Ley Silla” (Chair Law) changing federal Labor Law to recognize the right of employees to take breaks in a seat with a backrest during their work day. The law prohibits businesses from forcing workers to remain standing for hours on end and preventing them from periodically sitting down as they carry out their duties. The head of the pain clinic at the Guadalajara Civil Hospital welcomed the reform, noting that eight hours of standing in any kind of activity can atrophy bones and muscles.
