Zapopan’s street piano is back

Seasoned travelers will surely have seen pianos in the streets or at train or subway stations when they have visited cities around the globe.

Zapopan’s Culture Department installed a street piano project in November last year in the giant Plaza de Las Americas (John Paul II) facing the Basilica.  It was removed after a month, but the idea has been resurrected, in the hope the piano might become a permanent feature.

The donated and renovated piano, originally built in 1925, will be placed in the bandstand of plaza on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m., when an accomplished pianist will give a short performance. After that, pianists of all skill levels and ages are free to sit down and use it.

While Culture Department officials have not explained how the piano will be looked after, is expected that custodians be watching over either nearby or from afar at all hours of the day. The piano will stay up through the end of March, the department says. After that, who knows?
