Huge turnout for Women’s Day march

An estimated 50,000 people, nearly all of them women, took part in marches held in Guadalajara on March 8, International Women’s Day.

pg1cThe largest contingent, most of whom were decked out in purple attire or accessories, departed from the Rotunda of the Illustrious Jaliscienses in the city center, and made its way up Avenida Juarez/Vallarta, past the Parque Rojo and University of Guadalajara rectory and administrative headquarters, to Avenida Chapultepec and the Glorieta de los Desaparecidos (Niños Heroes) for an early evening rally. More and more women joined in the procession as it progressed along the route.

Hundreds of banners carried by the women highlighted issues ranging from gender and domestic violence to forced disappearance, inequality, abortion rights, impunity and sexist discourse.
