Shriners host rib feast to benefit ailing kids

Tuck into a fabulous feast while contributing to the Lake Chapala Shrine Club’s noble cause to support local children with severe medical problems by attending the 8th annual Ribfest on Saturday, March 5, 1 to 5 p.m.

The event will be held at the Villa Encantada, set just off the highway at the western entrance to Chapala, overlooking the lake.

The menu includes ribs and chicken with all the trimmings, with food service starting at 2 p.m. Two cash bars will operate throughout the afternoon. There will also be several door prize drawings and plenty of on-going entertainment.

Limited parking will be available in the lot at the waterfront park next door to the venue. Additional parking spaces will be found in the vicinity of the Maskaras Clinic and the Hotel Montecarlo, where the Hope House tour bus will make rounds for free shuttle service.

Tickets, going for 350 pesos a pop, are available from Tom Newburn, telephone 106-2089, Perry King at 765-5126, or any other local Shriner. Groups of 10 may arrange for reserved tables.

This fundraiser is the Shrine Club’s main source of revenue to help heal local youngsters suffering from serious burn injuries and orthopedic ailments. Funds are applied to cover specialized medical treatments and transportation to clinics in Guadalajara and the Shriners’ Hospital in Mexico City. Since 2006 the group has kicked in nearly two million pesos to assist over 1,000 kids. Last year alone expenditures ran at around 400,000 pesos for 179 young patients.
