Lake Chapala kayaking comes into vogue

A sign that kayaking is becoming the hip and trendy aquatic sport at Lake Chapala is the second annual mass paddling excursion programmed for Sunday, April 13.

Organizers are expecting more than 100 kayaks to cast off from the Chapala pier and head out for a marathon voyage to Jocotepec’s Malecón. Departure time is set for around 8 a.m., with estimated travel time calculated at five hours.

On board for the challenge are various expat members of the Lake Chapala Kayak Club, a friendly group of paddlers who get together twice a week for fun, exercise and outings to different destinations.

Formed about three years ago, the kayak club has just over 30 members, with a dozen hard-core regulars who are especially keen to popularize and promote the safe practice of the sport.

New members are required to go through introductory training on safety and rescue measures. Interested persons are welcome to hook up with Commodore Wayne Renz at informal luncheon meetings held every Thursday, noon, at Maria Isabel Restaurant. The restaurant is generously providing free and convenient storage space for the members’ vessels on the grounds of the original Posada Ajijic.
