Ajijic plaza fair steps back in time

Experience Ajijic village life of yesteryear at the Jamaica del Pasado, a traditional fair set for Sunday, April 13, 4 to 11 p.m., at the central plaza.

The square will be festooned with strings of tissue paper cut-outs to attract customers to a ring of food and drink stalls offering all sorts of typical fare:  tacos, enchiladas, sopes and tamales, steaming platters of pozole, along with atole, alcohol-laced ponche and refreshing aguas frescas in assorted flavors.  Sweet treats will include arroz con leche, pinole and icing-covered tachihual bread.

Kids and the young at heart can enjoy old-time fun playing Loteria (Mexican-style bingo), pretending to get hitched at the mock Registro Civil (Civil Registry) and pelting one another with Cascarones (painted egg shells filled with confetti).

Organizers suggest donning Mexican garb to fully capture the old-time mood.  Proceeds go into a common kitty to defray production costs of town’s Passion Play.
