Kicking it up at bomberos tourney

Firefighters from Chapala, Jocotepec, San Nicolás de Ibarra and San Juan Cosalá will be looking for glory on the grassy pitch of Chapala’s main soccer field in the day-long Torneo de Fútbol set for Saturday, January 24, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The competition schedule calls for preliminary games starting at 10 and Noon, with the championship match to capture the winner’s trophy following at 2 p.m.

As spectators keep an eye on the soccer action, they will also be able to enjoy intermittent musical entertainment, sample food and drink, and take chances at winning a bunch of attractive raffle prizes.

The price of admission is 50 pesos per person, good for multiple entries throughout the day. Purchase advance tickets at American Legion Post 7, Chapala Red Cross, Bar Tomás, Manix Restaurant and Diane Pearl Colecciones or pay at the gate. The Campo Municipal is located on Avenida Madero just south of the Pemex station.

The event is organized by the Lakeside Fire and Red Cross Assistance Group, with proceeds destined to benefit seven fire departments operating in the lakeshore region and Cruz Roja Chapala.

The support group-made up of active members of the local Royal  Canadian Legion, American Legion Posts 7 and 9, Cruz Roja, Ajijic Rotary, Axixic Masonic Lodge and the Lake Chapala Shrine Club-is collaborating with Canada’s Firemen without Borders, several U.S. fire departments and Mexican government authorities to establish a permanent line for importing equipment, safety gear, uniforms, and other essential supplies that will allow firefighters and first responders to better serve their communities in emergency situations.
