Battling Lake Chapala’s green beast

A volunteer army of local merchants, school kids, average citizens and government workers marshaled by Chapala Mayor Javier Degollado entered battle last weekend to beat back the massive invasion of lirio acuatico (water hyacinths) that has taken siege of Lake Chapala’s shoreline.

The call is out for recruits to join the blitzkrieg as it advances to Ajijic’s waterfront on Saturday, October 17, 8 a.m.  Although hand-to- hand combat is likely to be a lost cause unless state and federal authorities take command of an all-out war against the prolific water weed, enthusiastic public involvement to date suggests that the new mayor is making headway in uniting all sectors in his crusade to clean up the community and revive its lagging tourist trade.
