Ajijic Delegado loses wife as dengue soars

Lupita Martínez, the wife of Ajijic town administrator Juan Ramón Flores, died Thursday, August 20, after an extended battle against hemorrhagic dengue fever, the most severe form of the mosquito-borne disease that is now raging in the Lake Chapala region.

pg1aShe drew her last breath at IMSS hospital 180 in Tlajomulco, where she had been in the intensive care unit for the last two weeks.

Many milder cases of dengue are being reported in anecdotal accounts among residents of Chapala, Ajijic and other north shore communities. Jocotepec maintains the lead in the number of confirmed cases registered statewide by Jalisco’s Secretaría de Salud (SSJ), with 213 patients on record as of August 10.

Although SSJ statistics show only 15 cases for the municipality of Chapala, the local government’s medical director Enrique Gutierrez tells the Guadalajara Reporter that the real number far exceeds that figure because doctors and patients are not reporting the illness to the local state-run Centro de Salud clinic.
