The outflow of raw sewage gushing out of manholes at various points parallel to the Ajijic waterfront has caused concern among villagers and headaches for the municipality’s Simapa water and sewage utility for the past several weeks.
The problem was caused by a blockage of the underground pipes that feed wastewater generated in the town to the sewage treatment facility in San Antonio Tlayacapan.
A Simapa crew spent days trying to unclog the pipes obstructed with earth and debris with industrial rotor probes and vacuum tankers employed to extract sewer system sludge, to no avail. That left no option other than digging deep down into the trouble spot located in the vicinity of the Malecón basketball court, where lengths of aging clay pipes had ruptured.
According to Ajijic Simapa Administrator Timoteo Aldana, his crew started working Monday, November 7 to remove the damaged tubes where the failure occurred and replace them with sturdy PVC pipes. He anticipated that the repair job would be completed by the end of the week.
