Ajijic cuts loose in San Sebastian fiesta

Upper Ajijic will fall into the grip of a quirky mix of religious devotion, communal feasting and collective glee on Friday, January 20, as neighbors in the Barrio de San Sebastián take a break from regular routines to honor their patron saint.

pg13The celebration cranks up at daybreak, the morning after devotees of San Sebastián hike down to the San Andrés church to retrieve a statue of the twice-martyred saint that will be the centerpiece of a shrine erected at the corner of Emiliano Zapata and Marcos Castellanos for Friday’s 7 a.m. celebration of the Mass.

Afterwards, householders set up tables and chairs along the street to begin dishing out steaming platters of menudo (tripe soup), the relished typical breakfast fare that will be served to everyone on hand.  Home cooks then go back to their kitchens to prepare dishes for another communal meal, usually mole or pipián accompanied by rice, beans and tortillas, to be served at comida time around 2 p.m.
