Coming to town this week for the official opening of the new Centro Universitario Chapala, University of Guadalajara (UdeG) Rector Ricardo Villanueva Lomelí had more on his mind than good wishes for the first generation of local students.
He took advantage of the occasion to announce that the institution has earmarked 80 million pesos ($US4.25 million) in its 2023 budget to begin construction of the permanent campus.
Villanueva broke the news during a festive ceremony held Tuesday, January 24 at the waterfront Malecón to welcome the 55 young men and women admitted for the first semester of studies at CU-Chapala. Underscoring Chapala’s unique characteristics during his speech, he noted that it is an ideal place for the development of educational opportunities.
“We should look more to Chapala for its potential. It is not possible that its climate, geography and people be so highly valued in other parts of the world and not reflected in public policies, budget and investments in this municipality,” he declared.
