LCS aims to flush out plumbing troubles

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) has launched a fund-raising campaign to carry out a total overhaul of the restroom facilities at its Ajijic headquarters.

The rationale for the project was explained in an outreach letter sent to LCS members. With more than 2,000 people coming to the campus on an average high-season week for diverse activities, services and special events, the existing bathroom and sewage infrastructure have become stretched to the max.

The LCS grounds consist primarily of three private homes and outbuildings constructed more than 70 years ago. Their assorted bathroom facilities were designed for a modest number of daily users. Of the 16 bathrooms on campus, only four are currently functional. Some port-a-potties have been brought in to provisionally help pick up the slack.

A University of Guadalajara study of the grounds led to the adoption of a three-phased plan to address the restroom capacity shortage.

Stage one entails the construction of eight new eco-friendly restrooms in the south campus area, with work getting underway this fall. Stage two in 2024 will address the west campus area. The final push to boost flush capacity will wrap up with facilities located near the main entrance.
