U.S. murder suspect caught in Chapala

Jalisco’s Security Secretariat (SSE) reported the detention of a U.S. citizen accused of shooting and killing a woman in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 2016.

Officers from the SSE Special Groups spotted the man, who they later identified as Shane Michael “N”, aged 51, last Sunday during a routine patrol in downtown Chapala. He was stopped for questioning after demonstrating evasive behavior.

The National Migration Institute (INM) was notified when he failed to produce documentation of his legal status in Mexico. He was taken into custody by INM officials who became aware that he was wanted by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The incident coincides with U.S. media reports that Shane Michael Helmbrecht  was found in Mexico, expelled from the country and jailed in Cook County, Illinois pending extradition to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he will face trial for the 2016 murder of a female neighbor.
