Two suspects detained in Chapala murder case

Jalisco authorities have announced the arrest of two suspects implicated in the murder of Venezuelan national Guillki Maika Torres Obelmejias, an amateur singer, radio host and entertainment publicist whose body was found Sunday, December 3 on a property in Chapala’s Barrio de Guadalupe.

pg1aAt least one other individual is being sought for questioning in connection with the case.

Torres Obelmejias, 38, was reported missing on December 1, a short time after she stopped responding to communications with a close friend upon leaving her Chapala domicile.

According to Jalisco State Prosecutor Luis  Joaquín Méndez, agents from the Missing Persons Special Prosecutor’s office were immediately dispatched to investigate her disappearance. Intelligence work, search operations and interviews led to the issuance of a search warrant at the address, where two days later a partially buried corpse fitting her description was discovered along with an iPhone, a backpack, a tablet, and other items that appeared to be her belongings. Forensic studies confirmed her identity.

The victim of what has since been classified as a femicide was a native of the Venezuelan city of Ocumare. She eventually migrated to Colombia and later to Mexico to pursue her ambitions in the entertainment industry. Best known by her second given name Maika, she had been living in Chapala for about one year prior to her death.

Condolences poured in for Torres, includIng a tribute from the popular Mexican singer/actress Lucero, who described her as “a beautiful, charming, happy, young woman whom I was lucky enough to meet and hug many times.”
