Vancouver Island woodcarvers share their art & culture

The Ajijic plaza was filled with a whirlwind of activity this week revolving around the first edition of the Feria Internacional de Arte (FIAA), an intriguing Mexico-Canada cultural exchange showcasing live demonstrations by master woodcarvers from Tofino, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

pg1bFree collateral events during the February 19-24 program included a series of music and dance shows presented by Mexican performers, along with sculpture and painting displays at the venue set up by local artists.

Guest artists featured at FIAA were Hjalmer Wenstob, Gordon Dick and Arthur Campbell. They were accompanied by Wenstob’s wife and assistant Annika Benoit-Jansson, his brother Tim Masso, an ardent advocate for the revival of the native Nuu-chah-nulth dialect, and filmmaker Claudia Medina coming from Powell River, B.C. to record the happenings.
